How to Use a Random Number Generator

A random number generator is easiest to trust when you can see the range, press one control, and get an integer that actually sits inside that range. Number Draw Ledger keeps the instrument at the top of the page. There is no decorative hero in front of it, and the first display is an em dash until you draw. This article walks through that desk as it works in the browser.

How a random integer generator works here

You state a minimum and a maximum. The tool counts every whole number from one endpoint through the other. It then asks the browser for an unsigned 32-bit value from crypto.getRandomValues() and maps that value onto the range with rejection sampling. The point of rejection sampling is to avoid a slight extra weight that a naive remainder can give to some integers. If the cryptographic source is missing, the status line explains that drawing is paused. Educational pages stay readable.

The generator is not certified for regulated drawings or security-critical selection. It is a browser instrument for everyday choices, practice sets, and informal orderings.

Choosing minimum and maximum

Type whole numbers. Both ends are eligible. From 1 to 10, ten integers can appear: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. Zero is allowed. Negative integers are allowed. The supported window is −1,000,000,000 through 1,000,000,000. If minimum is larger than maximum, the error sits next to the control. The site does not silently swap the two fields.

Quantity is how many integers you want in one draw, from 1 to 100. Leave Unique Numbers unchecked if repeats inside that draw are acceptable. Turn it on when you need a set with no internal duplicates. Sorting changes only how the ledger is listed—draw order, ascending, or descending—not the stored history.

Worked example: 1 to 100

Open the random number generator. Keep Minimum at 1 and Maximum at 100. Quantity 1. Unique off. Press GENERATE NUMBER. The pale panel should replace the dash with one integer. That integer is one of one hundred eligible values. Press again for a new independent draw. The previous result does not make any other number “due.”

Set Quantity to 8 if you want a short list. The ledger will number DRAW 01 through DRAW 08, show the range, whether unique mode was on, and the local time. COPY RESULT and COPY ALL copy the displayed numbers, not a placeholder. DOWNLOAD CSV writes sequence, result, bounds, unique flag, and timestamp. If the clipboard is blocked, the note says so instead of pretending the copy worked.

Generating one or many numbers

A single integer is enough for “pick a page” or “pick a question.” Several integers help when you want a handful of practice items in one click. Unique mode is the right extra control when those items must all be different. If you ask for more unique numbers than the range contains, the quantity field explains the limit instead of looping forever.

History on the right keeps the last 30 generator operations in this browser tab using sessionStorage. Click an entry to reopen that draw. Clear History removes the log. Details are on the privacy policy.

Copying results and common uses

Paste copied integers into a worksheet, a slide, or a chat. CSV is for a spreadsheet. Everyday uses include numbering classroom activities, assigning a speaking order by mapping numbers back to a printed roster, or choosing a household task from a numbered list. For names rather than numbers, use the list picker.

Input mistakes to avoid

Decimal points, empty fields, and swapped min/max are the usual failures. Quantity 0 is rejected. Unique quantity larger than the span is rejected. Very large spans above 232 integers are outside what the 32-bit helper can cover; the supported bounds already stay under that ceiling. Do not treat a generated integer as proof that a process is official.

Quick range rows such as 1 to 100 or −10 to 10 write the bounds into the desk. They do not draw until you generate. That split is intentional so you can check the inputs first.

If you are following along on a phone, the 7/5 layout stacks: the large panel stays first, and the range desk sits under it. Generate buttons go full width. History is a vertical log you can scroll. None of that changes the math—only the arrangement of the same controls.

When you want numbers that never repeat inside one batch, skip the mental workaround of generating and deleting duplicates by hand. Turn Unique Numbers on, or open the dedicated unique picker. When you want names, do not encode them as 1–n unless the numbering is actually complete; paste the names into the list tool instead. Keeping the integer generator for integers avoids a quiet mismatch between a roster and an index.

FAQ

Can the result be the minimum or the maximum?
Yes. Inclusive ranges mean both endpoints are eligible.
Does sorting change the random draw?
No. Sorting only rearranges the ledger display.
What if Generate does nothing useful?
Read the field errors and the secure-random message. Invalid numbers are not auto-corrected.
