Each die is an independent integer from 1 through the face count. The total is the arithmetic sum of the faces shown. Notation NdS means N dice with S sides, for example 3d6.

Reading a total
One six-sided die has six equally likely faces. Two six-sided dice have 36 equally likely ordered pairs, but the sums 2 through 12 are not equally likely: there is one pair for 2 and six pairs for 7. That is arithmetic, not luck running out. Full write-up: how to roll virtual dice.
